Spent the weekend in the belly of the beast.
Scraping loose paint, vacuuming out all the dirt and loose paint, scrubbing everything...
At least now I can start with a clean (relatively) slate.
It have noticed the forward bulkheads are beginning to fall apart. Not bad for 35 years old.
I am going to wait to do the full replacement job until winter, but need to shore those up.
I have made a cardboard template and plan to add a full 1/2" of ply to the aft side.
When I went to loosen the bolts on the chain plate, the bolt sheeted right in two.
Of the 6 bolts on the starboard side, all but two have broken, and two not only sheared on the nut side, but also on the bolt head side as well. This now means I have to drill out the remaining bolt pieces.
But there is good news there... I think.
Although the nuts on the bolts are stainless, the bolts and washers are aluminum???
Looks like a 5/16" bolt, but I can't believe that they would have used aluminum.
My plan is to secure the new plywood to the old with SS screws, through bolt both pieces of ply at the bottom, just like the original and then buy longer SS bolts, nuts and fender washers to secure the chain plate.
Any other suggestions are very much welcome.
