Halyard replacement question

Halyard replacement question

Postby JoshE » Mon Apr 22, 2013 4:01 pm

I'm about to replace the spin and jib halyards on my boat, and I'm wondering what the sheaves are like on a 1982 model. The halyards that are currently there are what looks like 1/8" wire spliced to 3/8" line. I was originally planning to just use 1/4" line all the way through as replacement halyards, but I'm concerned that they may be too wide for the sheaves, given that what is on there (likely orig equip?) was made for much narrower material passing through it. Anyone have any experience replacing halyards on these boats?

I'm running 1/4" on both my main and jib haly's, and I think 3/16" on the spin with no problems. I don't know the vintage of my mast, but I would think all the sheaves should handle 1/4". I just installed a 3mm spectra back stay - havent sailed with it yet - and it seems a bit stretchy. I would go with 4mm vectran (it tends to run under sized) if you want to go that route.
