Team “Q” wins at EYC’s Harvest Day Regatta
By Mark Forrest
They say that history is written by the victors. On this site, history is written by whoever steps up and turns in a report, and although I have penned the official stories of many many many regattas I have lost over the years, this is a story with no regrets, second guesses or what ifs. In the spirit of humility, I will keep it in the third person.
The 2009 EYC Harvest Day Regatta offered up a little bit of everything to the 14 boat Santana fleet. Great committee work by first time PRO Phil Collins led to five complete races in conditions that were at times challenging. Saturday’s two races were both run into a very light east breeze. Sunday provided a more thrilling ride with enough pressure to get everyone on the rail for the first two races. The final race was back to light with a dead spot and 90 degree wind shift half way through.
Team “Q” (Mark Forrest, Scott Forrest, Stephanie Stano, Lauren Jennings) turned in a solid performance in all conditions with three bullets in five races. “H20 Boa” took a 1st and 2nd in the first two races Sunday, moving from 6th place overall to 2nd, but still needing to put nine boats between themselves and “Q” in race five. Just after the gun, “Q” got fouled in a light air start line tangle that left them parked, gasping for oxygen, and looking for redemption in the last row. They kept their wits about them and patiently picked their way through black holes and congested mark roundings to grind back to mid fleet. In the end, a 7th place finish was more than enough to take home the trophy.
Special thanks to EYC and Regatta Chair Lyle Mayer for a great finale to the Eugene sailing season. Thanks also to Rob Avery, who finished 5th overall, for making the long drive down from Canada to join us.
