2008 Emerald Cup Regatta

Mark Forrest sailing with the “Q” Team (Scott Forrest, Stephanie Stano and Kim Magers) took home his first regatta win in a surprising conclusion to the 2008 Emerald Cup Regatta.  With three bullets and a third going into race five, Giddy Up seemed to have an insurmountable lead, but a rogue patch of grass stuck to their rudder let one too many boats slip by on the downwind leg.  “We didn’t even think they were a factor,” says Forrest.  “We were concentrating on covering Aquila to hold onto second and didn’t realize until we crossed the finish line that Ron had fallen back far enough to make the points really close.”

 

The fourteen boat fleet included Rob Avery from Vancouver B.C., who skippered Don Erickson’s hull number one, “The One,” in it’s first major regatta since relocating to Eugene.  Rob will be back soon with his boat, Maya, to compete in the class championships.  Conditions were on the light side both days with periods of both drifting and steady breeze, but never more than 10 knots.  Temperatures into the 90s and mid-day lulls gave an opportunity for swimming and water fights as the race committee waited for a new wind direction to settle in.  Excellent work by the race committee and regatta chair resulted in a fun summer event as always.
