2006 SOCKS Regatta
May 13 & 14
Hosted by Seattle Yacht Club
This years SOCKS regatta ( Seattle One design Centerboard & Keelboat Series) had two days of “chamber of commerce “ sailing conditions on the north Puget Sound – 8 to 14 knots with blue sky and temperatures in the high 60’s to low 70’s.
Seattle Yacht Club did a terrific job of getting 9 races in over the weekend and the S20 class enjoyed some great racing. Teams in attendance included Kevin Swackhamers team from Bellingham, WA, Matt Wallis team from Anacortes, WA, Steve Orsini’s team from Anacortes, WA and team Disaster Area – skipper Kerry Poe, (Portland, OR), Andrew Kerr ( Olympia, WA) & Lance Purdy (Sacramento, CA).
With some very competitive starts on a short line and lots of mark roundings the teams in attendance got a real work out!
The current was in flood for the majority of the races and coupled with the prevailing NW to NE wind so that there were good waves to work with downwind on the first day and rivers of current for the teams to take advantage going upwind. The current was a real factor in lay line calls both upwind & downwind. At the windward mark it generally paid to over stand the mark with the adverse current and come in with lots of speed.
The regatta was won by Team Disaster Area with Steve Orsini and team Inferno in 2nd and Kevin Swackhamers and team on Hitched in 3rd.
We are looking forward to the SOCKS regatta next year and invite everyone in the class to come and join us for some great sailing on the north Puget Sound.
