2006 Spring One Design Regatta
Hosted by Coronado YC
April 1 & 2, 2006
There were promises of nearly 10 boats, but 5 is what we got Thanks to Linda Polich for her efforts in trying to bring others to the South Bay for this last S20 regatta before the Class Championships this summer. With Coronado YC being the site for this year's Nationals, I'm not sure we can hope for much better.
Saturday blossomed into a picture perfect day. After a week of rain, there was concern that the weekend wouldn't be much better. Instead we were served up a sunny pleasant day with temps in the mid to high 60's and a slightly lighter than normal breeze with velocity wavering from 8-12. This wasn't going to be a normal day in the south bay and there were certainly passing lanes. The races were about 4 miles with double windward/leewards. In races 1 and 2, Willem didn't need any lanes as he led wire to wire and deftly sniffed out the vacillating shifts. With 2 bullets, he looked like he had things under control. Race 3 belonged to Kownacki, preventing a VanWaay sweep. A nice sail with an ebb tide pushing us towards the club made for a pleasant sail back.
Sunday looked like a drifter. Sunny, warm but not a puff of wind at 11 AM. At 11:45, the breeze jumped from 2 knots from the East to 12 from the West and by the start hovered around 14. Typical South Bay breezes and typical direction. Kownacki led from the start with Willem and John having a good fight for second. After a lap around the track, there was a tie for first between Kownacki and VanWaay with one race remaining. With the breeze still in the 12-14 range, Kownacki and Martin were over early and VanWaay and Weightman were off with good clean starts. Kownacki doubled back to restart and headed right while the rest of the fleet headed left. Kownacki picked up a righty and regained the lead by the top mark. That was all that was needed as they finished in the order they rounded the top mark.
