The first annual Eugene Yacht Club One-Design Invitational Regatta
was held July 31st-August 1st. The brainchild of Chip Balough, four
fleets were asked to participate in the event; Santana 20’s,
Thistles, Wavelength 24’s and Day Sailors who also held their
Pacific Coast Championships.
The wind left much to be desired, being only 2-3 knots and sketchy
for a majority of the regatta, however the great competition
compensated for the light air and made for an extremely exciting
event. Three races were completed on Saturday and two on Sunday.
After the first day Mark Forrest's "Q" was leading by tie breaker
against the University of Oregon team who both had nine points; my
team on In-N-Out was in third with ten points.
The final results came down to the last race, where three boats were
tied at 15 points for first and three boats tied for second at 16
points. Light wind and a long race made for a very interesting final
race. In the end, the results of the final race were the results of
the regatta with Mark Forrest claiming third, Glen Hughes (on a
newly refurbished Spy, 314) second, and with a stroke of luck
In-N-Out taking first.
Overall, the company and organization of both the regatta and Rich
Johnson’s Race Committee made for a fantastic weekend of competition
and fun. I hope to see many more boats on the start line next year.
